Sequence from LAZARUS #6, on sale today. Art by Michael Lark and colors by Santi Arcas.
Minor spoiler warnings for Lazarus 6.
Wanted to put this together to talk a little about the science behind what’s going on here (and frankly, to assure myself that my storytelling wasn’t so clumsy that people didn’t know what’s going on). Set-up is that Forever is essentially on a stake-out all on her own, and after waiting in the dark for a while, what she has been waiting for occurs, namely, a robbery. The robbery is executed by two teams — a young woman, Emma, who is sent in first to “distract” the security patrolling the area, while the second group of Free commit the actual robbery.
There’s a lot to talk about in this sequence, frankly. The exploitation of Emma is problematic, and it’s meant to be; this is the first time Forever witnesses this kind of exploitation and corruption within the guard corps, from people representing her Family. Emma’s willingness to engage, as well, is pretty damning, not for her, but for a society where this is not only an option, it’s an expected option. Emma is almost entirely blasé about the whole thing. A much longer conversation to be had about this, clearly.
But that’s not the reason I bring this up.
The main reason I wanted to post this is re: Science! Forever is a genetically - not technologically - modified human being, and this is the first time we really get a hint at all that may mean. We already know she’s quick, and strong, and that she has incredible and rapid regenerative abilities.
Turns out she’s also been modified to shift her vision into the infrared spectrum. She can see heat signatures.
For those of you tracking this kind of thing, this means that she’s likely had some snake or beetle DNA spliced into the mix. You can read more here.
This is, I suppose, theoretically possible. Of all the things we’ve posited in LAZARUS thus far, this is, in my opinion, the wildest.
But it’s kinda cool, you have to admit.
Edited: I was mistaken; Brian Level did not provide background finishes on these panels, it’s all Michael! I have corrected this error!
